City Mechanic
JOB SUMMARY: This employee reports to the Director of Public Works and is responsible for skilled maintenance and repair of gas and diesel equipment. The employee will perform work in a garage with an open bend type door for vehicles to enter the garage. Working conditions are agreeable but can be slightly dirty with some exposure to exhausts, chemicals and odors. A variety of tools and equipment such as hand tools, jacks, chain hoists, wrenches, racks, arc welders, cutting torches, drill presses, lathes, grinders and welding equipment are used. This job requires the ability to operate a variety of vehicles. The City Mechanic is essential to conducting routine maintenance work to provide vehicle functionality and longevity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all city vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors;
Inspecting vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components to diagnose issues accurately;
Inspecting vehicle computer and electronic systems to repair, maintain and upgrade
Maintains and repairs gas and diesel vehicles and equipment such as cars, pickups, dump trucks, heavy tractors, motor graders, dozers, front end loaders, back hoes, rollers, paving machines, packers, and a variety of ground maintenance equipment;
Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work;
Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work;
Changes and repairs tires and tubes;
Maintains, stores and orders parts and supplies;
Records maintenance and repair work done;
Replaces transmission and motors with rebuilt equipment;
Repairs electrical, cooling, hydraulic, suspension and braking systems;
Operates or uses various tools and equipment such as hand tools, jacks, chains, hoists, air wrench, racks, arc welders, cutting torches, drill presses, hydraulic presses, lathes, grinders, and welding equipment;
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate;
Schedule future maintenance sessions and advise motorists on good vehicle use
Keep logs on work and issues
Regularly cleans vehicles and equipment;
Other related duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance;
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;
Ability to work and communicate with others clearly and concisely in both verbal and written communication;
Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment required to perform the job;
Ability to perform diagnostic tests on gas and diesel vehicle;
Ability to perform repairs, overhauls and maintenance work of considerable difficulty;
Ability to operate a variety of vehicles;
good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
Must have strong work ethic and excellent work and attendance records;
Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination, drug test and background check.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED; and
Proven experience as auto mechanic
Working experience with repairing hydraulic hoses and cylinders
Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods for both gasoline and diesel engines
Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles
Experience with general shop equipment (tire machine, lifts, wheel alignment machine etc.)
Additional mechanical/maintenance training from a vocational/technical school is preferred; and
3+ years of experience with gas and diesel vehicle repair and maintenance; OR
A combination of education, training, and experience providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid driver’s license;
Automotive Certification (preferred)
Specialization Certification (preferred)
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (Preferred)
Must maintain ASE Certification once obtained
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6 months of assuming the position (Preferred)

Majority of work is performed inside garage with some outside work where employee will be exposed to extreme weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to fumes, chemicals, toxic substances and high places. Will also work with sharp tools and hazardous machinery with moving parts, excessive noise, dirt and dust.
