PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
Under general supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, this semi-skilled position is responsible for working with
skilled technicians and learning skilled wastewater collection work; and performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
An employee in this class performs a variety of work from menial to difficult tasks with emphasis upon learning and
following the lead of Technician II or the wastewater supervisor and/or wastewater superintendent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are typical for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other
duties may be required and assigned.
Performs maintenance on collection systems as required on buildings, stations, pump houses, around the treatment
plant grassed areas; mowing, trimming, grounds upkeep, etc.
Uses a variety of tools and equipment such as: hand tools, drills, drill presses, Pipe cutters and threaders and voltage
meters, operates a motor vehicle, tractor, backhoe, other heavy equipment.
Responds promptly to after hour emergency calls including weekends and holidays. Must participates in department
on-call rotation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Ability to learn, good mechanical aptitude; ability to learn to perform skilled
wastewater collection work under varying weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relations with others; ability to express oneself, clearly and concisely, both orally and in simple writing.
Physical Requirements: Ability to pass a reasonable fitness and physical standards to safely perform work, if
required, as determined by city physician; vision and hearing, normal or corrected sufficient to read, write, and
safely operate tools and equipment used in work; dexterity and fitness sufficient to safely operate utilize and
maintain tools and equipment used in work; ability to lift and carry about 50 pounds, though greater weights may, at
times be lifted, carried and/or placed; dexterity and fitness to grasp, crawl, crouch, bend, stoop, climb, stretch, walk,
and otherwise perform physical functions of the assignment.
Work Environment: Work environment is generally agreeable with good working conditions but may be slightly
dirty or involve exposure to some other slightly disagreeable elements; work environment demands minimal
confinement with some protective equipment required; generally physical and working conditions are such that
minor abrasions, bruises, or burns are encountered, despite provision of safety measures and health precautions
(generally no lost time results).
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED.
Necessary Special Conditions: A valid Tennessee Operator’s License appropriate to the assignment is required.
